Dismounted Soldier Immersive Scenario Simulation Software with Omni-Directional TreadmillThis project is in collaboration with the Army Research Laboratory's Human Research and Engineering Directorate for the integration of the Omni-directional Treadmill (ODT) into immersive environments, and developing a distributed simulation framework for dismounted soldier cognitive research. JanusVF - Accurate Navigation Using SCAAT and Virtual Fiducials
VR Juggler SuiteThe VR Juggler project was started in 1997 by Dr. Carolina Cruz-Neira and a team of students at Iowa State University's Virtual Reality Applications Center. This ongoing work has produced a freely available open source, community-oriented virtual reality application development framework. VR Juggler is released under the GNU LGPL and will always be available for anyone and everyone to use free of charge. Check out the Official Website. Virtual Hydrologic ObservatoryVirtual Hydrologic Observatory: Integration of Field Observations and Process-based Simulations for Improving Student Learning in Engineering Hydrology Courses The Virtual Hydrologic Observatory is a multidisciplinary research geared to improve the engineering students’ understanding of fundamental concepts of hydrologic sciences and their relevance to engineering applications and prepare them as future professionals in the applied or research hydrologic fields.
Identification of New Targets for Pharmacological and Genetic Manipulation: Phylogenomic Classification of Novel Proteins
The function of a protein determines its role in health and disease, as well its potential value as a pharmacological product or bioengineering tool. Proteins can be grouped into families that share structural and functional properties, but the problem of assigning an unknown protein to the correct family has proven extremely difficult. Manual classification based on experimental evidence is accurate, but impractical for the millions of novel proteins that are now being discovered. Fully automated computational approaches are useful, but not sufficiently accurate. This project explores the use of Virtual Reality to bring the human into the loop and use the visual system to identify features that can be used to accurately assign unknown proteins to families. The fit of statistical models of protein families is overlaid on 3-D projections of protein structure, which highlights features that can be used for classification.
Conquest of the CoastlandsConquest of the Coastlands (CoC) is an educational role-playing game (RPG) with a science fiction/fantasy setting. Pursuing larger strategic objectives, the player character is challenged with a variety of problem solving “quests,” which form the main plotlines of the interactive narrative and provide the immediate motivations for player-character activities in the game. Each quest is designed to achieve specific learning goals.

sMIG: Simulated MIG Welding for Advancement in Technical Training
The simulated MIG lab (sMIG) is a welding simulator for Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding that is intended to cost roughly the same as a traditional welding station while eliminating material, building, and supply costs. The system is also capable of providing additional feedback that can be returned during and between practice runs giving educators more time to instruct in best practices. Point Cloud RenderingThe goal of the Point Cloud project is to enable OpenSG to display very large point clouds. Very large ion this context means billions of points.
